Diablo III's lead designer not worried about potential competition...
Fresh from a recent interview with Imagine’s own games™ magazine, Diablo III’s lead developer, Jay Wilson, says that the apparent lack of competition for the series is largely because games specifically like it are ‘Deceptively difficult to make’.
Sticking to its isometric guns, when it comes down to it, there isn’t really an awful lot out there that’s like Diablo's third-person take on the loot-based action RPG; something that Wilson claims other developers are either unwilling or unable to do.
“When it comes down to it, there isn't much else like Diablo”
"The problem with coming up with a competitor for Diablo is that you just don’t see people making games like Diablo any more," he says. "I can see a lot of third-person action games on consoles being competition for Diablo because I think they’re pulling the same audience." But other PC developers it seems are unwilling to dip their toes.
Wilson sums up: "Ultimately, I don’t want to sound unhumble but I’m not too worried about competition for Diablo."
The exclusive in-depth interview can be read in full in the forthcoming November edition of games™ – on sale 29 October.
